Five Common Skin Concerns & Solutions

What are your skin concerns? We cover five of the most common.

Chasing the glow, troubles with acne, sagging skin, capillaries and deep blackheads. We give you our solutions, prevention and maintenance techniques for the five of the skin concerns that frustrate the most…

From glass to glow, skincare has had a major boost this year; with natural, no-make up looks taking over and caked on makeup taking a back seat.

Skincare trends have been plaguing our Instagrams – rubber masks, pig collagen, even placenta tablets, you name it – it’s on the market. The jury is still out if these trends actually deliver, but why beat around the bush; treatments like The Hollywood Laser Peel give you beautiful glowing skin, with no downtime.

Hollywood Laser Peel

Glow in an instant with this no-downtime peel; perfect for when you need soft, dewy skin and don’t have time to wait for peels, or the downtime associated with other treatments – from clinic to party.

Just because you’ve made it through your teens, doesn’t mean you’ve made it through acne.

Genetics play a role, but so does the way we treat our skin. Our skin is the body’s largest organ and therefore can be a huge reflection of our lifestyle. Water and a healthy diet, free of cigarettes and alcohol, can improve your skin’s appearance.

Margaret Mitchell, luxury beauty retailer Space NK’s buying directory, recently spoke to byrdie.com to consider some of the other causal factors of adult acne, “With the boom in makeup, people are seeing their skin more clogged”

Include ‘breathing’ or makeup free days in your week, naked skin is in; and you know that old adage is true, you should always take off your makeup before bed.

Sometimes, regardless of how good your diet is, how many creams you have purchased and how religious you are with a skincare routine, acne can still be an issue.

At SKYN®, our talent can assist you on your journey. As everyone is different, we can assess and recommend a treatment plan that targets your specific concerns and is suitable for your skin type; so you can see results.

Some treatments we recommend for adult acne include the Hollywood Laser Peel and Meso Dermal Peels

Hollywood Laser Peel

The Hollywood Peel isn’t just suitable for getting that glow, it can assist with enlarged pores and active acne breakouts.

Mesoestetic Dermal Peels

Advanced Dermal peels, such as the Modified Jessners Peel offer a special combination of acids (including salicylic and citric acid) to treat a multitude of problems, including cystic acne, oiliness and discolouration. Expect some flaking/peeling for a period of 3 to 7 days.

Sun, squeezing, alcohol, heat, spicy food, stress, makeup… If you’re prone to redness or broken capillaries, you will understand that the source of triggers are fairly volatile.

The tone of the skin can be dramatically compromised when it’s constantly flaring up, or an area of frustration when the smallest trauma causes those tiny little broken capillaries.

This is an extremely common problem, with the assistance of Solari™ you can begin your journey of clear, even toned skin.

Solari™ IPL Spot Treatment

A fairly cost effective solution for broken capillaries is spot treatments. Many clients can see results after just one session, while others may need to return. Depending on the size, prices start from $20.00.

Solari™ IPL Skin Rejuvenation

The number one solution for rosacea is the Solari™ IPL device, which users light not laser to penetrate the skin, to significantly restore, rejuvenate and repair.

As we age, we begin to lose the elastin and collagen that keep our skin firm and plump. The downside of this is the face can lose volume, and appear saggy.

This can also occur prematurely due to lifestyle factors such as smoking, repetitive facial expressions, sun exposure or even the way we sleep.

According to LiveStrong, although slack skin is an inevitable part of ageing, there are a few things you can do to try and prevent it, including drinking plenty of water and exfoliating and moisturising as a preventative tool.

At SKYN® we have a range of treatments that can bring sagging skin back to life, such as Dermal Fillers, Angel PRP or Skin Boosters.

Dermal Fillers

Fillers, such as cheek fillers; can restore a youthful vibe, by replenishing volume which creates a full, high cheek to frame the face.

Montclair, NJ dermatologist Jeanine B. Downie explains, “The most frequent requests I receive from women are for …a solution for sagging cheeks. … Related to an overall deflation of the face, which can make patients look up to 10 years older” New Beauty.

Skin Boosters

Essentially injectable skincare. While Dermal Fillers replace volume; Skin Boosters improve collagen and elasticity from deep inside the skin, they can also be combined with dermal fillers or wrinkle relaxers.

Angel PRP

The infamous ‘vampire’ facial. It might go against your intuition to be slathering your own blood all over your face, however, our blood contains platelets, cells in the blood that generate collagen, tissue and elastin.

PRP restores these platelets, causing the skin to naturally rebuild where volume has been lost; and because it’s your own blood that is being used, there’s no risk of allergy or an immune reaction.

It’s fairly coherent that most people struggle with blackheads. Blackheads are hair follicles that have been clogged up, then oxidised; which causes them surface to darken, making them visible.

Some of the most common areas blackheads occur are on the nose and chin.

The best treatment to clear out blackheads is our medical microdermabrasion, or hydrabrasion. Additionally, we also offer extractions to ensure you don’t damage your skin, or exasperate the problem via picking and squeezing.

Hydrabrasion

At SKYN® we offer a microdermabrasion treatment that simultaneously vacuums out the dirt from your pores, exfoliates the skin and deeply cleans the pores with water. Exfoliants at home are effective, however, Hydrabrasion is much deeper; we liken it to getting your carpets professionally cleaned.

What’s better? THREAD LIFT or FILLERS

With an extensive menu of rejuvenation treatments now available, many are uncertain about the most suitable aesthetic treatment for their face. The issues facing those looking for non-surgical rejuvenation enhancement techniques are:

  1. what can be accomplished
  2. the downtime
  3. how long the results can last

The most popular face-enhancing, youth-reviving treatments in the last five years have been Dermal Fillers and Threadlifts. Their benefits in terms of reducing lines and wrinkles and lifting skin have different suitabilities, depending on what the client desires.

How Dermal Fillers work under your skin

Here is a quick rundown of what each of these aesthetic frontrunners do. Dermal Fillers are so called because they are made to fill the spaces in our skin which have lost volume with age, hereby showing signs of hollowness, lines and wrinkles. Most dermal fillers used nowadays are natural hyaluronic acid fillers, owing to their high safety profile and reversibility with a simple enzyme hyaluronidase. Owing to the advancements in dermal filler technology, fillers of different key strengths have emerged, each suited to deliver distinctive outcomes.

Dermal Fillers have a filling and sculpting capacity and can create enviable cheeks while restoring facial volume, while Skinboosters are targeted at replenishing the collagen stores of the superficial dermis, boosting their water content, immediately improving skin complexion.

How Threadlifts work under your skin

Threadlifts have undergone several positive revolutions; previous threads used were poorly made and not absorbable.

Latest innovations such as Silhouette Soft Thread Lift use 100% bio-absorbable threads that stimulate the formation of a supporting collagen matrix that will anchor the lift as the threads disappear in the upcoming months.

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift is famed for superb lifting capacity and utilises anchoring cones cleverly sited along lengthy Poly L-lactic acid threads and is known is the “Queen of all threadlifts”. If your aim is to have the maximal lift, then Silhouette would be the one for you.

While both of the above treatments may have their fair share of loyal followers, we have scientifically broken them down to their pros and cons. Bearing in mind that your aesthetic goal may be different from another person, the same goes for capacity for downtime, discomfort etc. While this may serve as a guide, nothing will replace a good heart-to-heart talk with your trusted aesthetic doctor. It helps to visit a clinic that offers both services, so you can be assured that their recommendation will not be biased (tainted by their restricted service menu) but rather be impartial.

Non-Invasive Thread Lift: What to consider before having the treatment?

Medical treatments offered by aesthetic doctors are increasingly becoming more similar to those provided by plastic surgeons. These days, aesthetic doctors are able to provide less invasive anti-aging and skin lifting treatments with minimal downtime.

The thread lift procedure was initially introduced in the late 90s. However, it didn’t enjoy much popularity then because it caused too much trauma and pain for the patient. At that time, most people were not receptive of non-invasive thread lift and were not confident of the results. It fell out of favour until Sinclair Pharma PLC renewed the public’s interest of non-invasive thread lift in recent years.

While many people are still uncertain about the outcome of the non-surgical thread lift (sometimes known as “lunchtime face lift”), Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics, believes new technology and the convenience of non-invasive thread lift treatments are some reasons why the non-invasive thread lift procedure is gaining popularity as an alternative to face lift surgery.

Although not as radical as a surgical face lift, a non-invasive thread lift can lift sagging skin visibly, granting a more defined, v-shaped facial contour, thus making you look less tired with less downtime and at a lower cost.

Considering the procedure? Here’s what you need to know.

WHAT IS A NON-SURGICAL THREAD LIFT?

A non-surgical thread lift is a minimally invasive treatment usually done with local anesthesia or oral sedatives. Using absorbable sutures made from biodegradable material, the doctor uses these threads to lift and contour the face. Cones or barbs are present along the threads to anchor the sagging tissues under the skin.

Each thread is inserted under the skin at precise points using a fine needle. Attached to the fine threads are tiny cones or barbs that are responsible for lifting and tightening the sagging tissues under the skin. It effectively raises sagging skin in areas like the cheeks, jowls, mouth and neck to its new lifted position. At the same time, the cones stimulate collagen production in the treated areas over the next few months after the treatment.

It is perhaps better to consider non-surgical thread lift as a preliminary rejuvenative procedure as an anti-aging treatment, rather than a surgical alternative.

SILHOUETTE SOFT THREAD LIFT

Silhouette Soft Threads lined with cones for anchoring sagging skin

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift uses resorbable sutures made of Poly L-Lactic acid (PLA) (also the same ingredient in Sculptra). PLA is a bio-compatible polymer that is used in a number of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

Using PLA monofilament with unique cones made of Lactide/Glycolide, the threads act as a scaffolding under the surface of the skin to lift sagging tissues. The cones are essential to anchor the sagging skin to lift the skin to its new, lifted position. At the same time, the cones stimulate the body’s production of collagen to replace loss volume which diminishes with age.

For the next few months post-treatment, your skin will continue its rejuvenative effects to restore volume to the face.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?

A Silhouette Soft Thread Lift procedure is performed under a local anesthetic.

Each thread mounted on a 25G needle, is inserted under the skin to guide the doctor to push the threads upwards until they are taut and embedded. During the process, the doctor pulls back the sagging skin and soft tissues and anchors them using the small cones that are found along the length of the threads in their new — more youthful — position.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER THE TREATMENT?

Visible lifting can be seen immediately after the treatment.

You may notice some swelling or needle marks at the entry points on each side of the face. Although they may remain visible for 1–2 days, most people are able to cover them with makeup.

It is not uncommon to experience some bruising and swelling around the entry points. You may feel tender around the entry points but it should be resolved in about a week. Although your face may feel tight for a few days, it will relax and the result will gradually become more natural in a week.

HOW LONG DOES THE RESULT LAST?

As the threads are absorbable, they will dissolve in about 6 to 9 months after the treatment. However, the skin will remain in its lifted position for a further 12 to 18 months.

You may choose to repeat the treatment in about 18 months as the longevity of repeated treatments tend to be longer than the previous treatment.

WHAT DO I NEED TO AVOID AFTER A THREAD LIFT TREATMENT?

Post-treatment care is important to ensure the efficacy of the treatment. Adhere to the following advice as much as possible:

  • Sleep on your back for the next 1 week after the procedure
  • Avoid facial massages and dental treatments for 1 month
  • No makeup for the next 48 hours
  • Go back to the doctor to address any dimpling or indentation at the entry or exit points

DO I NEED MORE TREATMENTS AFTER UNDERGOING SILHOUETTE SOFT THREAD LIFT?

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift treatments only provide lifting of facial contours. However, when combined with other treatments such as INFINI Radiofrequency and Microneedling, elos Sublime IR Skin Tightening, or  Dermal Fillers to fill deficient areas, a thread lift can provide some truly outstanding cosmetic results.

IS SILHOUETTE SOFT THREAD LIFT SUITABLE FOR ME?

Areas where Silhouette Soft Threads can achieve good lifting effects

The best candidates are young to middle-age people with mild to moderate sagging skin who want to soften their wrinkles and mild nasolabial folds. This anti-aging treatment is best suited for people who have apparent sagging skin with weak facial contours, but have sufficient collagen deposits to stimulate production.

Hinda, 45 years old, Mid face and Jaw Line

Areas that can benefit greatly from Silhouette Soft Thread Lift treatment are eyebrows, cheeks, jawline, and neck.

Although Silhouette Soft Thread Lift treatment can achieve wonderful lifting results, having realistic expectations are also essential. In most cases, the maximum lift that a thread lift can achieve is about 1 to 1.5cm. Threads do not work well for people with excessive sagging skin.

Arrange for a consultation with your doctor and discuss your needs and the results you expect. Your doctor will perform a thorough assessment of your skin condition, skin type, and bone structure before recommending the most suitable skin lifting treatment for you.

K-Beauty in Perth, Silhouette Soft Thread Lift

Women in South Korea, who seriously know a thing or two about beauty, are smitten about the non-surgical face lift technique called “thread lifting”.

  • Takes about half an hour
  • Known as the ‘non-surgical face lift’
  • Polylactic acid thread goes through skin after local anaesthetic injections
  • Stimulates collagen to firm the skin and visibly lift the face without surgery
  • Can combine with other treatments to optimise results and cater to the client’s desired outcomes

The technique, also known as the ‘non-surgical facelift’ has made its way to Australia. This is one of our signature treatments. Our Talent explain the fascinating process, which has been created for both men and women who are trying to achieve their best skin, with natural results. The treatment aims to obtain volumisation, lifting and skin tightening – in any area the sutures are placed.

How Does it Work?

Silhouette Thread Lift works by inserting threads and cones in areas along the face, which are then absorbed and help to stimulate collagen which firms the skin, plus visibly lifting the face without surgery. The entire treatment is performed with only local anaesthetic, so the downtime is minimal. The threads are made of a clear absorbable Poly Lactic Acid and have eight, twelve or sixteen absorbable cones. These cones break down in about twelve to eighteen months, but the results of the lift can last somewhere up to two to three years.

Although the threading technique isn’t exactly new, Silhouette Threads are a revolutionary technology. Our Talent can combine procedures for maximum results, which is pretty interesting. Our Talent often follow up the thread lift with Dermal fillers to replace lost volume, especially in temples and cheeks. For an extra boost, another option for clients is to follow up with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment (similar to the vampire facial – in which you inject your own blood to stimulate your collagen production).

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift – “The non-surgical face lift” in the Media

The Silhouette Soft Thread Lift, aka “the non-invasive face lift”, “the lunchtime face lift” or “the non-surgical face lift” has been gaining a lot of buzz in the media. With UK blog Save Face praising the technique and referring to it as a Star Treatment. Celebrities Gillian Taylforth (best known for her role on EastEnders), received the treatment ahead of her 60th birthday and Meg Matthews received the treatment to reclaim her confidence after menopause left her feeling flat.

Our Talent provide the treatment from SKYN in Subiaco. For more information contact SKYN or Book a Consultation online.

Unexpected Treatments for Firm, Glowing, Flawless Skin

Liquid facelifts, injecting your own blood into your face and the latest treatment that can give you skin so flawless you will be joining the #nomakeupmovement in a heartbeat.

Choosing the correct treatment can be overwhelming; each has different benefits, suit different clients and at first glance might just seem plain bizarre…. However, we are here to help you navigate the unknown and before you know it you will be embracing modern cosmetic technology with open arms.

So here it is, the ultimate rundown on some of our most unique procedures for skin tightening, toning and glowing:

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift

The Silhouette Soft Thread Lift is unique as it is the insertion of sutures VIA a tiny needle that literally LIFT your face, made with Poly Lactic Acid these threads are then reabsorbed by the body and progressively restore lost collagen. So it’s essentially one treatment with two actions, making it a fairly cutting edge advancement in cosmetic technology.

Most suitable for clients over 30 that desire a natural looking lift, the treatment can be used on the contours of the face, jawline, neck, eyebrow, cheeks and malar area. Clients can expect to shape, smooth, tone, add fullness and ease wrinkles in 30 minutes – without the use of incisions, sedation or scarring.

Expect an instant visible lift, with natural long lasting results that gradually improve as your body produces collagen.

Hinda, 45 years old, Silhouette Soft Mid face and Jaw Line

Platelet Rich Plasma (Angel PRP)

If it’s good enough for the Kardashians, it’s good enough for you, right? PRP or more widely known as ‘The Vampire Facial’ was made viral by Kim Kardashian spiralling it into the spotlight in 2013 and has since been seen in 2017 on her sister Kourtney’s snapchat.

The PRP facial is not for the faint of heart, as it involves using your own blood to rejuvenate the face. The treatment begins by withdrawing blood from the client’s arm, which is then spun in a centrifuge to extract the Platelet Rich Plasma and then re-injected into the treatment area. The plasma can trigger new blood vessel growth, increase collagen formation, and improve skin health – which can rejuvenate the skin.

As PRP can improve laxity, some of its less common-known uses can be for clients that have recently had a baby or lost weight and desire to tighten areas.

Clients can expect immediately brightened and refreshed skin, with results improving for up to three months after the procedure that can last up to 2 years.

Liquid Face Lift

The Liquid Face Lift is revolutionary as clients need not go under the knife to achieve a defined jaw, face sculpting or improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles. This non-surgical face-lift, also known as the ‘Injectable Facelift’, refers to using a combination of wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers to treat areas that the client desires to smooth and fill. Ideal for areas with lost volume, lines and loose skin.

The treatment takes about an hour to perform and results can last around 18 months, with fillers also continuing to boost skin volume and tautness over time.

Carol, Treated with 1 mL of Filler in the midface, 1 mL of Filler in the nasolabial folds, and 0.7 mL of Filler in the lips and perioral (lip) lines around the mouth. 3 weeks after treatment.

Refresh + Rejuvenate, The Mini Lift Premium Doctors Special includes 1.0ML of Premium dermal filler and 1 Area of Wrinkle Relaxer ‘D’. Usually $950.

INFINI

INFINI RF + Microneedling is a revolutionary advancement in cosmetic technology. This advancement refers to the way the radiofrequency is administered –  by combining microneedling, it sends energy deep into the skin tissue with precision.

INFINI is clinically proven and has been touted as the perfect treatment to use to get on board the #nomakeupmovement as it targets acne, large pores, scarring and pigmentation, tightens and tones.

Are Lasers and Fillers the true “Beauty on a Budget”?

How you can save thousands of dollars with lasers and fillers.

It might come as a shock to hear the words budget, fillers and lasers in the same breath – but if you’re investing your hard earned cash into keeping fresh-faced; these treatments could actually be the most cost-effective (and efficient) option for paving the way to beautiful skin.

Sure, upfront they may seem unattainable, a luxury only reserved for the upper echelon of society, but if you’re currently buying moisturisers, cleansers, serums, face masks, primers etc etc etc then you’re already spending big bucks, just in smaller bursts; and to what avail? Reposition these treatments in your mind to ‘buying in bulk.’ One smaller investment now could save you money in the future, plus the added benefits of real results and that consulting a professional could mean confronting a minor skin problem before it becomes a major one.

In a recent article by Harpers Bazaar they broke down dollar by dollar the most cost-effective treatments money can buy.

IPL PERMANENT HAIR REDUCTION

Never worry about razors, rashes, ingrown’s or waxing trips again. The benefits of IPL, aside from the obvious time saving and stress relief, is that once the hair follicle is destroyed it can no longer grow hair. Gradually, after enough treatments, there will be virtually no hair follicles left in the treated area. Usually, a minimum of 4 treatments over the course of 6 – 15 months are needed for satisfactory, long-term results.

WRINKLE RELAXERS

“When you skin starts to deteriorate, wrinkle relaxers can be used as a preventative treatment to reduce the number of fine lines and wrinkles on your forehead, glabella (11 lines), and around your eyes, says Dr. Jill Waibel, a board-certified dermatologist and the medical director and owner of Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute“The age that is recommended to begin to look into having these injectables can vary — the moment you begin to see wrinkles, commonly in your mid-20s to your early 30s, is when you should seek to have the treatment,” Waibel says.

Cost Breakdown

Wrinkle Relaxers typically costs between $300-600, depending on the areas you want to treat and the deepness of your wrinkles, and the effects last about three to four months. Skincare products are just starting to chip away at wrinkle relaxer technology, with topical peptides that slow muscle contractions. A premium wrinkle-relaxing day and night cream is $350 for three month’s worth and hailed as the next best thing to Injectables. So assuming you restocked your supply regularly for 35 years, you will wind up spending $49,000. If you start Wrinkle Relaxers at age 30 and receive two treatments a year at $400 each, you’ll spend $20,000 by age 55.” (source: Harpers Bazaar) However, the reality is a cream isn’t going to give you the same effects as injectables, so not only is it more expensive – it’s also empty dollars.
